Bournemouth History
Nestled along the southern coast of England, AFC Bournemouth has seen a remarkable rise to prominence in recent years going from the third tier of English football to the Premier League in a little over 15 years.
AFC Bournemouth was founded in 1899 initially named Boscombe FC, the club played in the Hampshire League before becoming Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic FC in 1923 and joining the Football League's Third Division South.
After a brush with financial turmoil that saw the club almost disappear and a number of years in the lower leagues, Bournemouth under the leadership of Eddie Howe completed their amazing rise through the football league to the Premier League in 2015 after clinching the 2014/15 Championship title.
Many expected Bournemouth to be the Premier League whipping boys but they maintained their Premier League status until the 2019/20 Premier League season after a tight relegation battle with Aston Villa and Watford. Bournemouth have since bounced back to the EPL after 2 seasons in the Championship and finished 5 points clear of the relegation zone in the 2022/23 season.
Bournemouths home stadium, The Vitality Stadium is one of the smallest grounds in the Premier League with a capacity of just under 12,000 people.
In 2022, Las Vegas-based businessman Bill Foley and his company, Turquoise Bidco Limited became 100% owners of AFC Bournemouth with plans to reach Europe and build a new 18,500-capacity stadium in the pipeline.
The club is worth around £100M with a current squad value of €352.80m (#14 in Premier League).
