In this post we'll look at every golden boot winner since the Premier League was formed in 1992.

What is the Premier League Golden Boot award?

Quite simple really, the Premier League Golden Boot award is given to the player who scores the most goals in a Premier League season ie. the Premier Leagues top scorer. In the event that 1 or more players score the same number of goals then the Golden Boot award is shared between them something that has happened 5 times since the formation of the Premier League.

What is the European Golden Shoe award?

Again pretty simple, the European Golden Shoe award is given to the player with the most goals throughout the top leagues in Europa during a single season. Rules are basically the same but in the event of 1 or more players having the same number of goals players are ranked by fewest minutes played ie. how many goals per match they scored.

In the 1999–2000 Premier League season, Kevin Phillips of Sunderland became the first Premier League to win the European Golden Shoe award with 30 goals in 36 appearances that season.

Who is the youngest player to win the Premier League Golden Boot award?

Michael Own is still the youngest player to win the Golden Boot award when he was just 18 during the 97/98 Premier League season where he managed 18 goals in 36 appearances for Liverpool and ended up join top scorer along side Chris Sutton & Dion Dublin.

He then repeated the same goal tally in just 30 matches during the 98/99 Premier League season at the age of 19 but again had to share the award with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink & Dwight Yorke who also matched his 18 goals for the season although Own had a better goals per match ratio having played 6 games less than both Hasselbaink & Yorke.

Who scored the most goals when winning the the Premier League Golden Boot award?

The player who has scored the most goals in any season was actually Erling Haaland during the 2022/23 Premier League season which was his first in the EPL.

Haaland scored a massive 36 goals in 35 matches making his goals per match ratio 1.03 which currently the highest goals per match ratio ever in the Premier League. Even more impressive is only 7 of his goals came from penalties during that season.

During the 16/17 season Harry Kane scored 29 goals in 30 matches giving him a goals per match ratio of 0.97.

However, if you factor in appearances and calculate the all-time top Premier League goalscorer based on goals per match then Thierry Henry with a goals per match ratio of 0.68 (175 goals in 258 matches) who would be considered the all-time top Premier League goalscorer.
